Solid Rock Cafe

For many years Glasgow's watering holes have appeared and disappeared just as quickly but one constant that has always remained is the Solid Rock Cafe on Hope Street opened in 1987, the bar is commonly known to all rock heads in the Glasgow area as the place to go if you're looking for some heading banging eardrum popping rock music along with a cool pint. However, it's not just for Glasgow's fans of the rock scene but a hub lunch spot for local office workers and your average train traveller looking for a quick bite to eat at their convenience, despite its dark and hard exterior that could make you think twice about if it's really worth the trouble. By weekend Solid Rock is loud, crowded and there is drinks a plenty all night however by day throughout the week there is a slightly quieter (as quiet as you can get in a rock bar) more laid-back atmosphere.

For my choice of drink I thought I would flip the script and left my choice of drink to my friend who does currently work at Solid Rock to give me the average punters choice of drink in the Solid Rock establishment, This left me with a Kraken and rum along with a pint of Munich Red because I can't be called the pints connoisseur and not get a pint that would just be blasphemous. This would be my first time having both so this was a risky game to play and at the bill totalling to £8.50 I hoping I haven't just washed my cash down the drain after forking out that much for 2 drinks I'm only a student after all. What makes a night out in the town is one key component and that is the company, the crowd of faces at the bar in question, to describe the people that usually visit Solid Rock I'd put it one way as 'Zoomers' the type of person that when you walk past them on the street you have to take a second glance to make sure that what you've just saw wasn't just your imagination however can't judge a book by its cover and even though you do get some nutters for the most part the clientele are sound and easy to get along with.

As you get your drinks make your way to one of the many booths which I have to say are very comfy however very low down and as a someone marginally taller than your average man myself that amount of distance to just get my seat can get the heart racing in that moment of fear. After that roller-coaster as I was sipping on my pint I had a look around the bar and quite quickly the vast amount of music memorabilia became apparent as it covers every inch of the walls and if I was actually more cultured in the act of rock music I might actually know what half of it is. To add to this there is also TV's across the walls and at my time of visit were playing a James Bond film, but you may as well be playing a Charlie Chaplin film cause ain't no way you're hearing any of it anyway. Once you've got your pint you can also take it downstairs and have a game of pool to keep you entertained in case the movie isn't doing it for you. Overall, the atmosphere was chilled went on a Wednesday evening so wasn't expecting the wildest of nights, staff were outstanding couldn't fault them one bit. I can say without doubt I was pleased with my experience there and enjoyed myself would recommend to any rock heads that maybe haven't tried it out yet and to anyone else looking to expand their horizons and experience something new.

Coronavirus Lockdown Booze

Well as you all well and truly know by now the coronavirus has arrived and lock-down has ensued this has therefore left me with a predicament on what to write on my last blog post, as this lock-down has stopped me from going to bars and clubs the only logical solution to this is to have a bevy in your own gaff however this has also become more difficult as queues to get into supermarkets has now become a task in itself to just get in to them. So your best bet is to pop into your local corner shop and see what drink they have left on offer and that will have to do you for the foreseeable, now you're only supposed to go out and shops for essentials and well think most of would agree some drink is essential to us all to get through these tough times. When I made it to my local corner shop the choice was limited but I was able to pick myself up some cans of Strongbow Dark Fruits  cider I know I've failed my namesake but in these tough times tough decision have to be made and ...

Firewater

Firewater is a fun indie bar on Sauchiehall   Street promising (and delivering) real music and hard liquor. This bar is a major draw for students, with occasional live music throughout the week and w hile the music policy airs on the side of indie, Firewater punters know how to rock out too. The venue has attracted its fair share of big name acts and many an after party to concerts over the years, t his late bar in Glasgow is heaving seven nights a week. Cheap drinks and brilliant music (indie/old school rock/pop punk/disco), many people use this place as a place to pre drink before going elsewhere but it is open all night. The bar also caters to those who are looking for a wee bite to eat offering food in the evenings before the crowds really start to gather.  Now this is a place more up my street rather than the thumping tunes of the Solid Rock these are actually tunes that I recognise and know. For my trip to Firewater went on a Monday evening so I decided I would...

The Flying Duck

Photo Credit ( The Flying Duck ) T he Flying Duck is a semi-secret bar/restaurant situated on Renfield Street in Glasgow City Centre, it's ideal place for open minded folks looking for something a bit different to the usual bars in Glasgow and  as i was looking up bars to visit for my blog The Flying Duck was one that caught my eye opened in 2007 and a sister venue to Stereo, Mono, The Old Hairdressers and The 78 looking to make a name for themselves in Glasgow's underground music, vegan and drinking scene. Offering die-soul food inspired menu, healthy drinks selection, pool table, gigs, clubs, quizzes, film screenings, drag karaoke there really seems to be a little bit for everybody. So as we made our way to The Flying Duck walking up Renfield Street we were looking out for the entrance to The Flying Duck but were unable to see one, we began to wonder if we had took a wrong turn somewhere and had ended up lost, it wasn't until I noticed that there was a "si...
